Rev. Prof. Hesse is a senior consultant physician and medical opinion leader in Ghana.
Prof. Hesse was trained in the University of Ghana Medical School, (BSc, MB ChB,1971-78), the University of Birmingham, UK, (PhD, 1984) and the Royal College of Physicians (1981-84) in various hospitals in England and Wales. He trained in Respiratory Medicine at Llandough Hospital, at the University of Wales, Cardiff, UK. He was trained as a TB and TB/HIV consultant by the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases Istituto Scientifico di Tradate, Tradate, Italy. He is also a foundation member of the Ghana College of Physicians. He has published extensively in areas of TB, HIV and Hepatitis in prisons and also in Hypertension and Asthma.
He is presently the medical consultant and CEO of Executive Health Care and Consult, a private medical consult specialised in preventive medicine and also a hepatitis treatment centre. He is a part-time Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the University of Ghana Medical School, where he was in full time work from 1988 till 2005. During his time at the University of Ghana Medical School, he variously served as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Departments of Physiology and Medicine& Therapeutics, one time serving as Head of the Department of Physiology (1996-1998). Additionally, he worked as a consultant physician at the Department of Medicine (1988-2005) and the Fevers Unit of the HIV clinic of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (2000-2005). He was also the Head of the Chest Department at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital from 1995-1998. He has been a part time general/specialist practitioner at Mission clinic since 1994.
He has been involved in many consulting roles with the Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Council and the National TB Control Programme. In addition, he is the Reverend Minister of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Atomic Energy Congregation and the Honorary Secretary of the Prison Ministry of Ghana, a Christian NGO.
Rev. Prof. Hesse is married to Prof. Afua Hesse and they have 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
