One-Year Clinical Rotation For Foreign Trained Medical Students
Introduction
Medical students who are studying medicine in some foreign institutions are required as part of their training to spend nine months to one year doing clinical internship/electives in Ghana to provide them with the requisite clinical experience necessary to ensure success in the final medical school examination. This will also help them to be able to take and pass the Pre-registration examination of the Medical and Dental Council (MDC) in order to be able to practice medicine confidently in Ghana. The Accra College of Medicine has therefore planned this course specifically for the purpose of providing such foreign trained students the clinical learning opportunity. It is hoped that such students on returning from their training abroad will return to ACM to complete the excellent clinical training experience to enable them pass, first-time, the MDC examination.
This programme is mainly taken by students who are in or going to their clinical years.
It has been noticed that most of those who have difficulties in passing the MDC pre-registration examination have weak basic science, pharmacology and pathologic knowledge, which forms the basis of sound clinical diagnosis and management. To remedy this, students will spend 4-6 weeks in the Preclinical Science Revision, which will be followed by 8-11 months of courses in the clinical sciences.
The Preclinical Science Revision course consist of revision of the basic sciences, pharmacology and pathological sciences at the end of which students will be assessed. Those performing satisfactorily will then proceed to the clinical stages, whilst those who are not so strong will continue to receive remedial correction combining it with their clinicals. They should then be prepared to work in the evenings and at weekends.
These will cover the main disciplines of medicine:
- Internal Medicine including Mental health and Family Medicine.
